2 Public Science Lectures at ArtScience Museum

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS (NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE)

Physics encompasses the study of the universe from the largest galaxies to the smallest subatomic particles. It forms the foundation of many other sciences - including chemistry, oceanography, seismology, and astronomy. Cell phones, the Internet, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are only a few examples of the physics-based technological developments that have revolutionised our world. Explore fun physics applications in our daily lives in the exclusive demonstration sessions by Professor Sow Chorng-Haur!

1) The Physics Professor’s Suitcase of Travelling Science Wonders!

1 December, Saturday | 2pm – 3pm
Venue: Expression Gallery, Level 4 | Free Admission

‘It’s impossible to learn very much by simply sitting in a lecture, or even by simply doing problems that are assigned.’ – Richard Feynman

There are endless opportunities to learn outside of the classroom. Join Professor Sow for a session of engaging science demonstrations which will enthrall and ignite the innate curiosity in you! These exciting demonstrations are visually appealing and act as a thought-provoking stimuli to promote a culture of inquiry and interactive exchanges.

2) Introduction to the Nanoworld!

2 December, Sunday | 2pm – 3pm
Venue: Expression Gallery, Level 4 | Free Admission

Richard Feynman is widely credited as the kickstarter of modern day nanoscience and nanotechnology with his talk titled ‘There’s plenty of room at the bottom’ in 1959.

Follow Professor Sow on his adventure to the Nanoworld where he shares fun-filled demonstrations revolving around nano concepts with you. Discover how nanotechnology plays a part in mechanical, chemical, electrical, optical and biological properties in this intriguing session!

Both sessions will be led by Professor Sow Chorng Haur (Head of Physics Department in National University of Singapore). Professor Sow has enthused participants across many schools - both internationally and locally and believes in effective use of a variety of demonstration materials to aid participants in understanding difficult concepts.
